Prototype & Small Batch Forging
New product development needs real forged samples with real forged properties — not machined lookalikes that behave differently on test. We produce prototypes by open die forging, soft tooling or machined-from-forged-blank routes so testing happens on representative material.

Quotable facts from Avadh Techno Forge, Gundasara, Gondal, Rajkot.
- Prototype Quantity: 1 – 200 pcs

Prototype Routes Without Full Die Cost
For one to twenty pieces, an open die pre-form machined to the drawing gives correct material and heat treatment condition at a fraction of tooling cost. For twenty to two hundred, a simplified single-impression die often bridges the gap to production tooling.
- Open die pre-form plus machining
- Simplified single-impression soft tooling
- Correct grade and heat treatment
- No full production die commitment
Design Feedback Before You Commit
During prototyping we flag the features that will cause trouble at volume — insufficient draft, sharp internal corners, unfillable thin webs, parting line placement that cuts across the load path. Fixing them at prototype stage costs a drawing revision; fixing them later costs a die.
Path to Production
Once the prototype is approved, the same team designs the production die, so the knowledge gained during sampling carries directly into tooling rather than being re-learned by a different supplier.
Three Routes to Forged Prototypes
Prototyping should produce parts in the right material and condition, not lookalikes that behave differently on test. Three routes achieve that without committing to production tooling, and the right one depends on quantity and geometry.
| Route | Quantity | Lead time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open die preform, then machined | 1 – 20 pieces | 10 – 25 days | Simple geometry, correct grade and heat treatment |
| Machined from a forged blank | 1 – 50 pieces | 10 – 25 days | Complex geometry needing accurate features |
| Simplified single-impression tooling | 20 – 200 pieces | Longer, but below production tooling cost | Bridging to production |
Design Feedback Before You Commit to Tooling
The most valuable part of prototyping is often what it reveals about manufacturability. During prototype work we flag the features that will cause trouble at volume — insufficient draft, sharp internal corners, unfillable thin webs, a parting line that would cut across the load path, tolerances no forging process can hold. Fixing those at prototype stage costs a drawing revision; fixing them after a production die is cut costs a die.
- Forgeability review with written feedback
- Correct grade and heat treatment from the first sample
- Tolerance review before tooling is committed
- Material and hardness reports with prototype parts
Carrying Knowledge Into Production
Once a prototype is approved, the same team designs the production die, so what was learned during sampling goes directly into the tooling rather than being re-learned by a different supplier. Engineering and sampling charges are typically adjusted against the first production order. See how to order a custom forging.
People also ask
Can I get forged prototypes without paying for a production die?
Yes, through open die pre-forms machined to your drawing, or simplified soft tooling, both giving correct grade and heat treatment.

Questions Answered
Can I get one forged sample only?
+
Yes, single pieces are produced by the open die route with machining to your drawing.
Will the prototype match production properties?
+
Material grade and heat treatment are identical. Grain flow differs slightly on machined prototypes, and we state that clearly on the report.
How fast can a prototype be delivered?
+
Typically 10 to 25 days depending on material availability and machining content.
Do prototype charges get adjusted against production?
+
Engineering and sampling charges are usually adjusted against the first production order.
