Forged Wellhead & Drilling Components
Drilling and wellhead hardware operates at pressures and depths where component failure is measured in lost wells, not lost hours. These are high-integrity forgings — heavily worked, fully tested, and documented from billet to dispatch.

High-Integrity Forging Practice
Minimum forging ratios above 4:1, full ultrasonic examination, and mechanical testing on production-representative samples rather than on separately forged coupons. This is the discipline oilfield specifications demand.
- Forging ratio above 4:1
- 100% ultrasonic examination
- Production sample mechanical testing
- Full heat number traceability
Threads and Connections
API and proprietary connection threads are machined and gauge verified. Thread integrity is the single most common cause of drill string failure, so gauging is documented rather than assumed.
Materials and Toughness
4140, 4145 and equivalent alloy grades quenched and tempered to specified strength with Charpy impact values verified at the required test temperature — because toughness, not tensile strength, governs failure at depth.
High-Integrity Forging Practice
Drilling and wellhead hardware operates where failure is measured in lost wells rather than lost hours, and the manufacturing discipline reflects that. Reduction ratios are higher, examination is complete rather than sampled, and mechanical testing is carried out on material representative of the production part rather than on separately forged coupons.
| Requirement | Typical position |
|---|---|
| Forging ratio | 4:1 minimum, verified through the route sheet |
| Ultrasonic examination | 100%, to ASTM A388 or customer standard |
| Surface examination | Magnetic particle inspection |
| Impact testing | Charpy at specified temperature |
| Hardness | Controlled, with sour service limits where applicable |
| Traceability | Heat number through every operation |
Sour Service and Hardness Limits
Where a well produces hydrogen sulphide, sulphide stress cracking can fail high-strength steel at stresses well below yield. Materials are then selected under NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, which caps hardness — generally around 22 HRC for carbon and low alloy steels — and that cap applies to welds and heat-affected zones as well as base metal. Because capping hardness caps strength, sour service components are frequently larger than their sweet service equivalents. See NACE MR0175.
