Forged Spindles

A spindle carries rotating load through precision bearing seats. Its accuracy directly becomes the accuracy of whatever it drives, so runout tolerance is functional rather than cosmetic.

Short answer

Forged spindles carry rotating loads through precision bearing seats ground to ±0.01 mm and Ra 0.4 µm. Seats are induction hardened for wear resistance while the body stays tough, with straightening and finish grinding after heat treatment to eliminate distortion.

Runout Becomes Product Error

On a machine tool spindle, radial runout transfers directly into the workpiece as dimensional error. On a wheel spindle it becomes vibration and uneven tyre wear. Grinding bearing seats concentric to a common axis is what controls it.

  • Runout transfers to the driven part
  • Bearing seats ground concentric
  • Ra 0.4 µm on seats
  • Straightened after hardening
02

Hardening and Stability

Bearing seats are induction hardened for wear resistance while the body retains toughness. After hardening the spindle is straightened and finish ground, because heat treatment distortion would otherwise become permanent runout.

Spindle Capability and Runout Control

A spindle's accuracy becomes the accuracy of whatever it drives. On a machine tool, radial runout transfers directly into the workpiece as dimensional error; on a wheel spindle it becomes vibration and uneven tyre wear. Bearing seats are therefore ground concentric to a common axis and verified.

Straightening and Stability After Heat Treatment

Long slender parts distort during hardening, and that distortion becomes permanent runout unless it is corrected. Spindles are straightened after hardening and then finish ground, so the shaft runs true in its bearings. Where a spindle will be used in precision equipment, stress relieving before finish machining reduces the residual stress that would otherwise release slowly in service and move the part.

People also ask

Why is spindle runout so critical?

Radial runout transfers directly into whatever the spindle drives — as dimensional error on a machine tool, or as vibration and uneven tyre wear on a wheel spindle.

Which steel is used for spindles?

EN19 and EN24 for general machine spindles, EN31 where bearing surfaces run directly on the spindle, and SS 410 where corrosion resistance is also needed.

Do you grind spindles in-house?

Yes, cylindrical grinding to ±0.01 mm with runout and surface finish verified before dispatch.

FAQ

Questions Answered

What runout can you hold on a spindle?

+

Bearing seats ground to ±0.01 mm with Ra 0.4 µm finish and runout verified against the drawing.

Are spindle bearing seats hardened?

+

Yes, typically induction hardened for wear resistance while the body stays tough.

Do you straighten spindles after heat treatment?

+

Yes, straightening followed by finish grinding, since hardening distortion would otherwise become permanent runout.
