Drop Forging

Drop forging drives a hammer ram down onto heated stock held in a die. The energy of the falling mass does the work, blow after blow, until the metal fills the impression. It remains the most flexible high-strength forming route for medium volumes.

Hammer Forging With Operator Judgement

A skilled hammer operator adjusts blow energy in real time, reading how the metal fills. That judgement handles variation in billet temperature and weight far better than a fixed-stroke press, which is why drop forging suits mixed-model production and job work.

  • Pneumatic and friction screw hammers
  • Blow energy adjusted per piece
  • Handles varied billet sizes
  • Fast changeover between part numbers

Products Best Suited to Drop Forging

Hand tools, spanners, hooks, clevises, chain links, agricultural tines, tractor linkages, forged brackets and lever arms. Anything where a strong, tough part is needed in hundreds to thousands per batch and geometry has generous fillets.

03

Cost Structure and Changeover

Die cost is lower than a press-forging die of comparable size, and setups take a fraction of an hour. For a customer running twenty part numbers at moderate quantity, that changeover speed is often worth more than raw cycle time.

04

How a Hammer Delivers Its Energy

A drop hammer works by energy rather than by force. The ram is raised and then driven down, and the work is done by the kinetic energy it carries at impact. That energy dissipates quickly into the surface of the workpiece, which is why hammers are excellent on parts of moderate thickness and less suited to very heavy sections where deformation must reach the core. A skilled operator adjusts blow energy in real time, reading how the metal fills.

Why Changeover Speed Matters More Than Cycle Time

For a supplier running twenty part numbers in moderate quantities, the time lost changing tooling can exceed the time spent forging. A hammer's fast setup and tolerance of variation in billet size and temperature is precisely what suits that pattern of work — and why drop forging remains the practical route for job work, agricultural parts, hand tools and spares. Where weight consistency and statistical capability matter more, a press is the better choice; see drop forging versus press forging.

  • Fast changeover between part numbers
  • Tolerant of billet size and temperature variation
  • Lower tooling investment than press dies
  • Suits batches from a few hundred pieces upward

People also ask

Is drop forging suitable for small batches?

Yes. Hammer changeover takes under an hour and die cost is lower than press tooling, so batches from 200 pieces on existing dies are economical.

What products are typically drop forged?

Hand tools, hooks, clevises, chain links, agricultural tines, tractor linkages, brackets and lever arms.

FAQ

Questions Answered

Is drop forging the same as closed die forging?

+

Drop forging describes the equipment — a hammer. It can use open or closed dies. Most of our drop forging runs closed impression dies, so the terms overlap in practice.

What is the smallest quantity you will drop forge?

+

Around 200 pieces with an existing die, or 500 pieces when a new die is required.

Can drop forged parts be supplied machined?

+

Yes, our CNC section finishes drop forgings to drawing, including drilling, tapping and grinding where specified.

Do you undertake drop forging job work?

+

Yes. Send drawings or samples and we quote job work rates on customer-supplied or our own material.
