Precision CNC Machining

A forging is only half a component. Our machining shop takes the forged blank straight from heat treatment and finishes it to drawing on CNC turning centres and vertical machining centres, so you buy a ready-to-fit part with one purchase order and one quality report.

Turning, Milling, Drilling, Grinding

CNC lathes handle diameters, faces, bores, grooves and threads; VMCs handle faces, slots, pockets, drilling patterns and tapping; cylindrical and surface grinding finish the features that need sub-micron surface quality. Fixtures are designed in-house so forged datums are held repeatably.

  • Vertical machining centres for prismatic work
  • Cylindrical and surface grinding
  • In-house fixture design

Tolerances and Surface Finish

Routine work holds ±0.02 mm on critical diameters and Ra 0.8 µm on turned surfaces, with ground features reaching Ra 0.4 µm. Concentricity, runout and perpendicularity are verified on height gauges, bore gauges and, for complex parts, on layout inspection against the model.

One Supplier, One Traceability Chain

When forging and machining sit under one roof, a dimensional problem is traced to its forged origin in hours instead of being argued between two vendors. Material certificates, heat treatment charts and dimensional reports travel with the same batch number all the way to dispatch.

Machining Capability at a Glance

Forgings arrive at our machining section straight from heat treatment, and leave as components ready to fit. Keeping machining in-house means a dimensional problem is traced back to its forged origin through one set of records rather than argued between two suppliers.

Why Machining a Forging Differs From Machining Bar

Forgings have draft angles, a parting line and stock that varies slightly across the surface, so they cannot simply be clamped like bar stock. Fixtures are designed to locate on stable forged features and clamp without lifting or bending the part, because a component that measures correctly on the machine and incorrectly on the customer's gauge has usually been distorted by its own fixture. Scale is removed by shot blasting before the first cut, since residual scale is abrasive enough to destroy an insert immediately.

  • Fixtures designed and built in our own tool room
  • Shot blasting before the first cut
  • Normalising for consistent hardness and predictable tool wear
  • Datum established in the first operation, then carried through

FAQ

Questions Answered

Do you machine forgings made by other suppliers?

+

Yes, we accept machining job work on customer-supplied forgings and castings, subject to incoming material verification.

What tolerance can you hold on production runs?

+

±0.02 mm is routine on turned diameters; tighter functional fits are achieved by grinding.

Do you supply inspection reports?

+

Every machined batch ships with a dimensional report against the drawing, and material and heat treatment certificates where applicable.

Can you handle small machining batches?

+

Yes. Setup-efficient fixturing makes batches from 25 pieces upward viable.
