Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)
Safety-critical forgings must be proven sound without being cut open. Our NDT capability covers ultrasonic examination for internal discontinuities, magnetic particle and dye penetrant inspection for surface and near-surface defects, and full hardness mapping.

Ultrasonic Testing to ASTM A388
Straight-beam and angle-beam scanning detects internal laps, bursts and inclusions that no visual check would reveal. Acceptance is judged against the customer's specified class, and the scan plan, calibration block and operator certification are all recorded.
- Straight and angle beam scanning
- Calibration against reference blocks
- Acceptance to ASTM or customer class
- Documented scan reports
Surface Inspection: MPI and DP
Magnetic particle inspection reveals cracks on ferromagnetic parts, including tight fatigue cracks invisible to the eye. Dye penetrant covers stainless and non-magnetic components. Both are applied after final machining, when a crack that matters is most likely to be exposed.
Where NDT Is Non-Negotiable
Lifting components, pressure-retaining valve and flange bodies, rail and automotive safety parts, and any forging feeding an application where failure risks life. For these we treat NDT as a release gate, not an optional extra.
Which NDT Method Finds Which Defect
Each non-destructive method detects a different class of defect, so specifying the wrong one produces false confidence rather than assurance. Ultrasonic testing looks inside the section; magnetic particle inspection finds surface and near-surface cracks on magnetic materials; dye penetrant finds defects open to the surface on any material including stainless.
| Method | Finds | Limitation | Common standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ultrasonic (UT) | Internal bursts, laps below surface, large inclusions | Needs reasonable surface for coupling | ASTM A388 |
| Magnetic particle (MPI) | Surface and near-surface cracks | Ferromagnetic materials only | ASTM E1444 / E709 |
| Dye penetrant (DP) | Defects open to the surface | Cannot see below the surface | ASTM E165 |
| Visual (VT) | Underfill, gross surface defects, marking | Surface only | Per specification |
| Hardness survey | Heat treatment errors, soft spots | Not a crack detection method | ASTM E10 / E18 |
Acceptance Criteria Are Not Part of the Method
A common specification error is to write "UT per ASTM A388" and stop. A388 describes how to examine a forging — scanning technique, calibration, reporting — but it does not say what is acceptable. The acceptance class must come from your specification or purchase order. Without it, the supplier is left to decide what passes, which is exactly the decision a specification exists to remove.
- State the method and the acceptance class
- Say whether examination is 100% or to a sampling plan
- Say at what stage testing happens — usually after heat treatment
- Say whether third-party witnessing is required
When Testing Happens, and Who Witnesses It
Ultrasonic examination is normally carried out after heat treatment and after rough machining, so the structure is final and the surface allows good coupling. Magnetic particle inspection on safety-critical parts is applied after final machining, when a crack that matters is most likely to be exposed. Test reports state method, equipment, calibration reference, acceptance class and result, referenced to the heat number. Third-party inspection agencies and customer inspectors are welcome to witness at our works by prior appointment. Personnel qualification for NDT is defined internationally by frameworks such as ASNT SNT-TC-1A and ISO 9712.
People also ask
Do you allow third-party inspectors to witness NDT?
Yes, TPI agencies and customer inspectors are welcome at our Gondal works by prior appointment.
What NDT standard do you work to?
ASTM A388 for ultrasonic examination, with acceptance criteria taken from your specification since A388 defines method rather than acceptance.

Questions Answered
Do you allow third-party inspection?
+
Yes. TPI agencies and customer inspectors are welcome to witness testing at our plant by prior appointment.
Is NDT charged separately?
+
It is quoted as a line item because scope varies — 100% inspection, sampling plan or first-article only, according to what your specification demands.
Can you test parts forged elsewhere?
+
Yes, NDT job work on external forgings and castings is accepted with a written scope.
What documentation is provided?
+
A signed test report per batch stating method, equipment, calibration reference, acceptance class and result, cross-referenced to the heat number.
